The World's Best Poetry, Volume 09: Of Tragedy: Of Humour

This ninth volume of a landmark early 20th-century anthology ventures into poetry's most opposing territories: tragedy and humor. Rather than treating these as opposites, the collection reveals how each mode illuminates the human condition in ways the other cannot. Here you'll find verses that plumb the depths of loss and grief, alongside poems that skewer the absurdities of daily existence with sharp wit and playful irony. The poets gathered here span centuries and continents, united by their willingness to confront life's sharpest edges. Francis A. Gummere's introduction frames poetry not as a decorative art but as a fundamental social force, a view that animates every selection that follows. The result is a collection that feels both ancient and urgent, proving that the best poetry has always served as a mirror for our most essential selves.
