The World English Bible (WEB): Luke
The Gospel of Luke opens not with thunder and spectacle, but with a doctor writing to a friend. Luke, a physician, addresses Theophilus with careful intent, promising to set down in order the things most surely believed. What follows is the most meticulously researched account of Jesus' life ever written, one that reads less like scripture and more like the finest ancient biography. The narrative begins with two annunciations: first to an elderly priest named Zacharias, who will father John the Baptist despite his wife's barrenness, then to a young woman in Nazareth named Mary, who will bear the Son of God. These opening chapters contain some of the most stirring poetry in Western literature: Mary's Magnificat, the prophecy of the aged Simeon over the infant Jesus, the angelic chorus to shepherds in the field. Luke's distinctive focus on the marginalized, the poor, and the overlooked runs through even these foundational moments. Women are central figures. The outcast becomes the sacred. This is a Gospel written for the excluded, and it begins by telling them they were always included.

“I believe in happy endings,” I tell him. “And it feels like this movie has gone on forthe right amount of time.”“Movie?” Dr. Patel says, and I think he would look exactly like Gandhi if he had thosewire-rim glasses and a shaved head, which is weird, especially since we are in leatherrecliners in such a bright, happy room and well, Gandhi is dead, right?“Yeah,” I say. “Haven’t you ever noticed that life is like a series of movies?””
