The World English Bible (WEB): James
James doesn't let you off easy. Written to early Christian communities scattered by persecution, this short letter confronts a dangerous idea: that verbal confession of faith is enough. Against comfortable belief, James insists that faith without works is faith without life. The epistle pulses with practical urgency: care for the poor, control of the tongue, patience in suffering, wisdom in conflict. It's the most Jewish book in the New Testament, dense with the Proverbs tradition, practically a manual for how to actually live as a follower of the Way when the world is watching. James refuses to separate what God joins: faith and action, worship and justice, inner transformation and outer conduct. Two thousand years later, it still pierces the comfortable. If you've ever wondered whether belief costs you anything, James has an answer.
