The Works of Francis Maitland Balfour, Volume 1 (of 4): Separate Memoirs

Francis Maitland Balfour was twenty-eight years old when he published his masterwork on vertebrate embryology. He was thirty when he died on Mont Blanc, in 1882, having revolutionized our understanding of how animals develop. This first volume of his collected memoirs opens with a preface detailing the circumstances of his death and the establishment of the Balfour Fund, a memorial to one of Victorian science's most brilliant minds. What follows are the papers that established Balfour's reputation: detailed investigations into the embryology of sharks, the development of the vertebrate nervous system, and the foundational comparative anatomy that would influence generations of biologists. These are not dry technical documents but the work of a young scientist thinking in revolutionary ways, connecting embryology to evolutionary theory at a moment when biology was inventing itself. For anyone interested in the history of science, the emergence of modern embryology, or the tragic genius who might have been another Darwin, this volume preserves the actual papers where the science began.
