The Washington Historical Quarterly, Volume V, 1914

This 1914 volume of the Washington Historical Quarterly captures a pivotal moment in how early 20th century scholars understood the Pacific Northwest's tangled past. As a primary source written by historians of its era, it offers invaluable insight into how the region's history was being recorded, debated, and constructed just decades after Washington achieved statehood. The collection opens with George Wilkes' completed History of Oregon, a significant frontier narrative, before turning its attention to the pressing question of the region's indigenous peoples. The essays examine the status, treatment, and future of the Indians of Puget Sound, tracing the devastating effects of treaties, federal legislation, and the steady advance of white settlers. The authors grapple with questions of assimilation, cultural survival, and the complex legacy of both American and British interaction with indigenous communities. What emerges is a document that is itself a historical artifact, revealing both the genuine scholarly concern and the era's prevailing assumptions about indigenous peoples. For historians of the Pacific Northwest, scholars of indigenous history, and anyone seeking primary sources on early 20th century perspectives of the region's first inhabitants.
