The War History of the 1st/4th Battalion, the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment

These were the boys from Preston, the mill workers and shop assistants who traded their civilian lives for khaki and the mud of the Western Front. This meticulously compiled history preserves what the men of the 1st/4th Battalion, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment experienced between 1914 and 1918: their training in England, deployment to France, and the brutal attrition of trench warfare. The anonymous author, likely a survivor or someone who served alongside them, weaves together official records, personal letters, and firsthand accounts into a living memorial. We see the battalion through the quiet horrors of holding the line, through set-piece offensives and the daily negotiations with death that defined the soldier's existence. What emerges is not just a military record but a portrait of ordinary men called to do extraordinary things. The book endures because it ensures that the specific sacrifices of these Lancashire lads, their names, their stories, their particular courage, are not lost to the anonymity of statistics.
