The Voyage of the First Hessian Army from Portsmouth to New York, 1776

In the winter of 1776, twelve thousand Hessian soldiers left Portsmouth, England, bound for New York. They were German mercenaries hired by the British crown to suppress a colonial rebellion across an ocean most of them had never seen. This meticulous historical account reconstructs their harrowing voyage through contemporary letters, military records, and the diary of J. G. Seume, a young officer who documented every storm, death, and endless day trapped aboard cramped vessels. The reader encounters the full brutality of eighteenth-century military transport: scurvy and dysentery spreading through cramped quarters, rations rotting in the heat, storms that scattered the fleet, and the gnawing uncertainty of men sailing toward a war they barely understood. This is not the triumphant narrative of American independence but its forgotten counterpoint, the story of foreign soldiers, far from home, whose suffering shaped a conflict they had no stake in. For readers who know the Revolution as battles and founding fathers, this book offers something rarer: the perspective of the men who fought it from the margins.
