The Virginia Company of London, 1606-1624

This is the foundational scholarly account of the enterprise that created English America. Wesley Frank Craven examines the London merchants, gentry, and adventurers who financed the Virginia Company, the speculators and dreamers who gambled their fortunes on a colony that nearly perished. The book traces their motivations (profit, prestige, religious reform, escape from England's cramped society) and reveals the brutal practicalities: starvation, hostile indigenous peoples, factional infighting, and the desperate search for gold that never materialized. Craven is especially illuminating on the contrast between the London and Plymouth companies, showing how the former's deeper financial resources and more pragmatic leadership allowed it to persist when rivals failed. The narrative follows the Company's evolution from a profit-seeking venture into an increasingly desperate experiment in colonial governance, as adventurers struggled to balance returns for shareholders with the impossible task of sustaining lives in an alien environment. This is history at its most concrete: not the myth of Jamestown, but the difficult, compromised, often tragic actual story of how America began.
