The Vanished Pomps of Yesterday

Frederic Hamilton served in the diplomatic corps of a Britain that still believed in empire, and his memoir captures what was lost when the Great War shattered the European order. He writes of glittering courts in Vienna, Budapest, and the lesser-known princely seats of Eastern Europe, where he attended balls in palaces that no longer exist, danced with countesses whose titles would be abolished, and witnessed a social order so assured of its permanence that it never imagined its own disappearance. Hamilton is neither sentimental nor cynical; he records the opulence with the clear-eyed attention of a man who understood he was watching something unrepeatable. The book follows the diplomatic circuit from before the war through its aftermath, watching as the Habsburg world Hamilton knew collapses into new nations, broken families, and forgotten languages. His anecdotes are specific and vivid: a particular dinner where the silver was so heavy servants struggled to lift the plates, a conversation with an aging archduke who sensed the end but could not speak it. This is memoir as elegy, but one that earns its melancholy through precise observation rather than purple prose.
