The Vagabond in Literature

The Vagabond in Literature, written by Arthur Compton-Rickett in the early 20th century, analyzes the 'vagabond' character type in 19th-century literature. It focuses on notable writers such as William Hazlitt, Thomas De Quincey, and Walt Whitman, exploring their shared traits of restlessness and a passion for the earth, often in conflict with societal norms. Compton-Rickett presents the vagabond spirit as a complex aspect of literary history, emphasizing the interplay between biography and literature in shaping these authors' unique perspectives.
