The Upward Path: A Reader for Colored Children

Robert Russa Moton

Children & Young Adult Reading, Poetry, Short Stories

In 1920, at the height of the Jim Crow era, Black children were starved for books that reflected their lives, their history, and their humanity. This anthology was the answer. Compiled by the renowned educator Robert Russa Moton, alongside Mary White Ovington and Myron T. Pritchard, The Upward Path gathered stories, poems, and essays specifically for young African American readers , children who rarely saw themselves celebrated in any book. The collection pulled together voices that spoke directly to aspiration, heritage, and pride in a world designed to make these children feel small. It was radical simply by existing: a book by and for Black children, refusing to let their dreams be订缩小 to fit white expectations. The anthology offered not just entertainment but validation , proof that their ancestors had built, create, and achieved, and that they, too, carried that legacy forward. More than a reader, it was a mirror and a window, showing young readers both who they were and who they could become.
