The Unpopular Review, Volume II Number 3

This 1914 quarterly opens with a genuinely radical proposition: that the progressive era's celebrated 'social conscience' is itself a form of class prejudice. In "Unsocial Investments," A.S. Johnson dissects how moralizing about poverty and labor often ignores the complicated realities of individual circumstance, the messy economics of housing reform, and the easy cruelty of demonizing property owners. It's a contrarian essay that refuses easy answers, arguing that righteous certainty about economic justice can be as reductive as the greed it condemns. The remaining essays continue this willingness to poke at sacred cows of early 20th-century reform, examining the ethics of investment, the tensions between labor and capital, and what moral responsibility actually looks like when you strip away ideology. The result is a time capsule that feels startlingly contemporary: a document from over a century ago that's still willing to ask whether being on the 'right side' means you've actually thought clearly.
