The two kinds of fear

In this Victorian moral fable, two boys face the same temptation but their choices diverge based on what they fear. Robert Wright dreads punishment; Harry Brown fears sin itself. One boy calculates that he can sin and escape notice, that the consequences are manageable if he's clever enough. The other boy cannot bear the corruption of his own soul, regardless of whether anyone would ever know. Their diverging paths one toward tragedy, one toward redemption form a stark examination of moral psychology that still resonates. Written as a tool for teaching children the difference between merely avoiding detection and genuinely pursuing goodness, this compact tale asks readers to consider: what do we truly fear, and why? The answer reveals whether our morality is performative or deeply held.
