History - British, History - Modern (1750+), History - Warfare

In the sweltering summer of 1918, twenty-nine British officers sat in a German POW camp, waiting. For nine months, beneath the watchful eyes of the notorious Commandant Niemeyer, they had been digging. Not with tools designed for the task, but with improvisations born of desperation and ingenuity: modified tin cans, hand-carved boards, a rudimentary ventilation system rigged from biscuit tins. The tunnel stretched over sixty meters, burrowing through clay and sand toward a wood beyond the fence. When the night of July 23 arrived, they went in batches into the darkness, passing tools and provisions hand over hand, knowing that discovery meant solitary confinement or worse. This is the story of that escape, told by a man who was there, who interviewed the survivors while their stories were still raw. Durnford writes not as a distant historian but as someone who lived the grinding monotony, the petty cruelties, the black humor that kept men sane, and the electric thrill of freedom glimpsed through tunnel-dark. It endures because it captures what escape stories always reveal: that the human spirit, when pressed against impossible walls, will dig.
