The Triumph of the Innocents

William Holman Hunt's 1870 masterpiece began as a painting and became something far stranger: a visionary text that expands the canvas into prose dense with Gothic terror and Pre-Raphaelite symbolism. The story follows the Holy Family's flight into Egypt, but Hunt's imagination populates the night with the murdered infants of Bethlehem, their spirits visible only to Mary, trailing the holy travelers like a grief procession. The bereaved mothers follow at a distance, their wailing woven into the wind. Hunt writes with the intensity of a man who has seen the unspeakable and must make you see it too: every detail calculated, every shadow weighted with meaning. This is Victorian religious art at its most visceral and unsettling, a meditation on what innocence costs, on the terrible arithmetic of salvation. The children died so that Christ might live, and Hunt refuses to let you look away from that bargain. It endures because it asks the question no one wants to answer: what does triumph mean when it is built on the bodies of the innocent?
