The Treaty of Waitangi; Or, How New Zealand Became a British Colony

The Treaty of Waitangi, signed in 1840, remains the foundational document of New Zealand - and few books capture its making with the immediacy of this 1914 account. Buick transports readers to a lawless colonial frontier where British settlers and Māori iwi navigated escalating chaos: disputed land deals, mounting violence, and the desperate need for order. The narrative centers on Captain William Hobson's desperate mission to negotiate a treaty that would satisfy British imperial ambitions while supposedly protecting Māori sovereignty. Buick, a Liberal MP and seasoned historian, weaves together dispatches, witness accounts, and diplomatic correspondence to reveal the treaty's birth not as inevitable history but as contingent, fraught, and shaped by individual choices. What emerges is a portrait of transformation - a young colony grasping toward its future, and a document whose ambiguities would echo across centuries. For anyone seeking to understand New Zealand's origins, this is a front-row seat to the moment everything changed.
