The Tragical Acts, or Comical Tragedies of Punch and Judy

In Victorian London, the rickety booth of Mr. Punch was as familiar as the pub on the corner: a chamber of gleeful violence where a rubber-hose policeman met his maker, where babies flew across the stage, where death itself became a punchline. W. J. Judd's 1879 volume attempts something audacious: to wrangle this anarchic tradition into history and handbook alike. The book traces Punch from his Italian ancestor Pulcinella through centuries of transformation, then pivots sharply into the practical arts of booth-building, puppet manipulation, and audience orchestration. What emerges is a portrait of a performance form that operated on its own brutal logic, where comedy and catastrophe were inseparable. Judd writes with scholarly earnestness about a tradition that was, at its core, gloriously unhinged. This is both essential cultural record and time capsule of a popular entertainment that refused to behave.
