The Totall Discourse of the Rare Adventures & Painefull Peregrinations of Long…

In 1615, a Scottish traveler named William Lithgow boasted that he had spent nineteen continuous years wandering the most famous kingdoms of Europe, Asia, and Africa. This is his account of that astonishing journey, but it is also something more: a raw, unapologetic record of a man who paid for his adventures in blood. Lithgow was 'Cutlugged' Will, a nickname earned when the brothers of a woman called Miss Lockhart discovered him with their sister and responded by slicing off his ears. The mysterious 'Dalida wrong' that provoked this violence remains tantalizingly unexplained, but the scars certainly were not. Written with the boastful confidence of a man who had seen the Colosseum in ruins, sailed the Mediterranean, and survived plagues, robberies, and wars, this narrative offers an extraordinary window into the early modern world as experienced by a restless Scottish outsider. Lithgow observes cultures with sharp eyes, records distances and dangers with obsessive precision, and defends his wandering spirit against accusations of folly. Here is travel writing before tourism existed, when journeying to foreign lands meant genuine peril and genuine transformation.
