The Tongues of Toil, and Other Poems
These are angry, urgent poems written in blood and ink. Barnard, working in the late 19th century, gives voice to the voiceless: children hunched over looms before they can read, prisoners awaiting the hangman's rope, workers whose backs break so others may prosper. This is not gentle verse about nature's beauty. This is poetry as protest, as witness, as call to arms. The collection moves from the grinding poverty of "The Children of the Looms" to the moral reckoning of "The Hangman," tracing a world where the poor are punished for their poverty and the powerful escape judgment. Barnard's language burns with righteous fury. He refuses to look away from factory smoke and prison cells, from bodies broken on the altar of industrial progress. The poems summon solidarity among laborers and demand that readers feel the weight of what it means to toil in chains. More than a century later, these verses still sting. They endure for anyone who has ever been told their work has value but their life has price. Barnard writes for the worker, not the poet. His voice is the sound of the excluded insisting on being heard.
