The Third Massachusetts Regiment Volunteer Militia in the War of the Rebellion,…

This is a vivid, intimate chronicle of one Massachusetts regiment's journey through the opening years of the American Civil War. Drawing on letters, diaries, and official records, the account captures what it meant to trade civilian life for the brutality of camp and battlefield. From the eager patriotism of 1861 to the hardened realism of 1863, we follow the Third Massachusetts through early engagements, long marches, and the daily grinding misery that defined Civil War soldiering. The author preserves the voices of the men themselves, their fears, their complaints, their strange humor, and their steady courage. This is not distant military history but the immediate, ground-level experience of young men learning to kill and dying in ways both random and terrible. For anyone seeking to understand the actual texture of Civil War service, this regimental history offers an indispensable window into the ranks.
