The Theatrical Primer

Step into the glittering chaos of the Edwardian stage. Written in 1904, this charming primer whisks young readers behind the velvet curtain to meet the peculiar creatures who inhabit theatrical life: the long-suffering actors, the theatrical managers pulling invisible strings, the press agents spinning magic from nothing, and the audience members who transform from friend to foe in a single act. Vivian's wit gleams through every vignette, skewering the absurdities of theatre with a knowing wink rather than a pedantic finger. He reveals how stagehands become invisible magicians, how leading ladies command empires of silk and temper, and how opening night brings both terror and wonder. It's a time capsule of Edwardian theatre customs and stagecraft jargon, yet its sharp observations about performance, ego, and the magic of make-believe feel remarkably current. For any child who's ever peeked backstage or dreamed of the footlights, this book offers an irresistible invitation to the family business of theatre.
