The Tenth (irish) Division in Gallipoli

This is the firsthand account of the first all-Irish division to serve in the British Army, written in 1918 by Bryan Cooper, who fought alongside these men as an officer. The 10th (Irish) Division was composed entirely of volunteers with no prior military experience - farmers, clerks, teachers, and sons of every county in Ireland - who left their civilian lives to face the inferno of Gallipoli in 1915. Cooper documents their transformation from raw recruits into soldiers who would earn a reputation for extraordinary bravery, even as they endured harrowing casualties. The book captures a remarkable moment when Irishmen from divergent backgrounds and political beliefs - Home Rulers, Unionists, nationalists - united under a common cause, their divisions temporarily set aside for the duration of the war. Written while the wounds were still fresh, this account carries the weight of testimony and serves as a memorial to men who fought and died in conditions of almost inconceivable brutality.
