The Sultan and His People

The Sultan and His People, written by C. Oscanyan and first published in 1857, provides a historical account of the Ottoman Empire's cultural, social, and political landscape. Oscanyan, a native of Constantinople, explores the relationship between the Sultan and the diverse populations within his realm, aiming to dispel myths about Eastern life. The book offers insights into Turkish society, including its history, religious beliefs, and customs, while reflecting on the Western fascination with the Orient and the misunderstandings that arise from a lack of direct experience with the region.
