The Sublime Jester

In a small town that values conformity, Albert Zorn learns early that being different is a kind of exile. The son of inherited dreams and complicated heritage, he moves through a world that sees him as either invisible or ridiculous - a figure of mockery rather than meaning. Yet beneath the laughter directed his way lies a fierce inner life, a sense of self that refuses to be diminished by those who cannot understand him. Brudno's early 20th-century novel traces Albert's passage through childhood and adolescence, mapping the wounds inflicted by small-town prejudices and the quiet heroism required to survive them. The title's irony cuts deep: the world casts Albert as a jester, but his story reveals something closer to the sublime - the dignity of a soul that endures misunderstanding without losing itself. This is a novel about inheritance in all its forms: the dreams passed down, the burdens carried, and the self one constructs from the materials society rejects.
