The Stranger in Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury sits at the crossroads of English history, and this early 19th-century guide traces its story from the Britons who first raised its walls against Saxon advance through the Norman conquest, the wars with Wales, and the political upheavals of the Wars of the Roses. Thomas Howell documents a town that served as both fortress and marketplace, its mint churning coin under Edward the Elder, its council chambers hosting the great and terrible decisions of Ethelred and Canute. But this is no dry chronicle of dates and battles. Howell also captures the living texture of Shrewsbury in his own time: the chartered companies and their ancient ceremonies, the trade that drew merchants from across the Midlands, the complex governance of corporation and guild. The annual Show, with its procession and feast, stands as a testament to traditions that had persisted for centuries. For readers drawn to the deep past of English towns, to the way borders shifted and identities formed, this book offers a window onto a place that witnessed the making of a nation.
