The Strange Career of the Chevalier D'eon De Beaumont: Minister Plenipotentiary from France to Great Britain in 1763

The most mysterious diplomat in 18th-century Europe wore women's clothing in the court of Catherine the Great, terrified English society by appearing in drag at a masquerade, and kept the continent guessing about his true gender for decades. This 1885 biography reconstructs the extraordinary life of Charles de Beaumont, a man who served Louis XV as a secret agent, negotiated as a plenipotentiary, fought as a soldier in the Seven Years' War, and confounded everyone who tried to pin him down. Telfer draws on secret correspondence from the French archives to reveal a world of court intrigue, political espionage, and a man who weaponized ambiguity itself. The book traces d'Éon's early years under Louis XV's mysterious 'Secret du Roi' operation, his infiltration of the Russian court in women's dress, and his eventual posting to London where his presence sparked scandals that echoes across Europe. What emerges is not just a biography of one extraordinary individual but a window into an age when personal identity could become the ultimate diplomatic tool, and when the line between fact and rumor was deliberately, dangerously blurred.
