The Story of the Great War, Volume V (of 12): Neuve Chapelle, Battle of Ypres, Przemysl, Mazurian Lakes

This volume offers one of the earliest full accounts of World War I's bloodiest campaigns, written while the war still raged. The anonymous author traces the fighting across both Western and Eastern fronts, beginning with the grim winter of 1914-1915 when soldiers huddled in muddy trenches, awaiting the renewed offensive that would come in spring. The narrative captures the brutal Battle of Neuve Chapelle in March 1915, where French artillery thundered before infantry advanced into German lines, achieving limited gains at staggering cost. It moves to the Second Battle of Ypres, where chlorine gas debuted as a weapon, and eastward to the siege of Przemysl, where Austro-Hungarian forces trapped in the fortress finally succumbed after months of deprivation. The volume concludes with the Masurian Lakes campaign, where German forces achieved a decisive victory against Russian armies. What emerges is a document of extraordinary historical weight: contemporary observation of military strategy in real-time, before the war's full horror became clear, before the memoirs and novels that would later define our understanding of 1914-1918. For anyone seeking to grasp how contemporaries perceived the conflict as it unfolded, this remains essential.
