The Story of Switzerland

Switzerland's story begins not with conquerors or empires, but with people building stilted homes on alpine lakes - a image that captures something essential about this nation. This 19th-century history traces the remarkable journey from prehistoric lake dwellers through Roman occupation, medieval fragmentation, and into the improbable birth of the Swiss Confederation in 1291. What unfolds is not merely a chronicle of dates and battles, but an examination of how a loose alliance of mountain valleys became one of Europe's oldest continuous democracies. The narrative emphasizes the themes of freedom and self-determination that run through Swiss history - a people who repeatedly chose resistance over submission, who forged unity from diversity across language and religion. Written in an era when the Swiss were reconsidering their national identity, this book reveals both the factual foundations and the mythology that shaped Swiss self-understanding. For readers curious about how nations form, how cultures blend, and how small states survive among great powers.
