The Story of Isaac Brock: Hero, Defender and Saviour of Upper Canada, 1812

He stopped the American invasion of Canada with audacity and iron will, and died a hero in the moment of victory. Major-General Sir Isaac Brock was the indomitable force who held Upper Canada together in 1812, when the young United States sought to swallow the colony whole. This early 20th-century account traces his journey from athletic Guernsey boy, inspired by his ancestors' martial tales, to the commander who earned the title "Saviour of Canada." Nursey paints a vivid picture of the Channel Islands' turbulent history that forged Brock's resilient character, then follows his military career through the conflicts that shaped him into the leader who would face down an enemy army at Queenston Heights. The narrative captures the romantic heroism of Canada's founding moment, when British regulars, Canadian militia, and Indigenous allies held the line against overwhelming odds. Brock's death in the battle's decisive hour became legend, cementing his place as the defining figure of Canadian resistance.
