The Story of a Confederate Boy in the Civil War

What makes this book matter is its unflinching intimacy: a fifteen-year-old boy documenting his own journey from civilian to soldier, from idealism to the grinding horror of war. David Johnston joined the 7th Virginia Infantry swept up in the fervor surrounding Lincoln's election and Virginia's secession debates. What begins as patriotic excitement curdles into the brutal daily reality of camp life, endless marching, and combat. Johnston doesn't romanticize his cause or his younger self. He gives us the politics of the time as he lived it, the debates in taverns and parlors, the certainty that would dissolve under fire. But it's the soldiers' lives that stay with you: the friendships forged in suffering, the grim humor that kept boys human, the food and filth and fear. Written in 1914, with the distance of decades, this memoir still burns with the confusion and conviction of youth caught in history's grinding machine.
