The Star People

On a moonlit beach, three children discover the night sky isn't so distant after all. Uncle Henry, left to care for his niece and nephews during their family's brief absence, trades bedtime stories for something far more extraordinary: he turns the sand into a map and the stars into friends. Using pebbles in the sand, he guides them to trace the ancient shapes hidden in the heavens above Ursa Major, Ursa Minor, and beyond, transforming what could be a dry astronomy lesson into an act of imaginative play. This early 20th century gem captures something many modern children's books forget: the conviction that learning and wonder are not opposites. Johnson's gentle, conversational prose invites young readers to see the stars not as distant abstractions but as old friends waiting to be recognized. For families seeking to share the wonder of the night sky with children too young for technical jargon, The Star People remains a tender place to begin.
