The Stamps of Canada

The first Canadian postage stamps were not merely adhesive paper. They were acts of defiance against British postal monopoly, arguments for colonial self-governance, and declarations that a scattered nation deserved its own voice. Poole's authoritative history traces Canadian postal evolution from the French colonial era through the revolutionary 1851 reforms that gave Canada its first independent stamp system. The book examines every major issue, the artists and administrators who shaped them, and the political pressures that made certain designs possible while others vanished into bureaucratic drawers. What emerges is a portrait of a young nation negotiating its identity one denomination at a time. For philatelists, this remains an essential reference. For historians, it offers something rarer: a lens into how nations literally stamp their ambitions onto the world.
