The St. Gregory Hymnal and Catholic Choir Book

The opening lines of this 1920 collection carry a particular weight: they were written by someone who learned these songs as a child and wanted to preserve them for generations to come. This is not merely a songbook but a bridge spanning the early twentieth century and centuries of Catholic liturgical tradition. Here you will find the Latin hymns that have been sung in cathedrals and village churches alike, alongside their English counterparts, organized by the rhythm of the liturgical year. From the haunting anticipation of Advent ('Hark! A Mystic Voice is Sounding') through the triumphant promise of Christmas ('O Come, O Come, Emmanuel') and into the penitential depth of Lent and the glorious resurrection of Easter, this book maps the entire landscape of Catholic devotional music. The motets and devotional pieces offer settings for choirs, congregations, and smaller sodalities. Whether you approach this as a scholar researching early twentieth-century Catholic musical practice, a musician seeking historically-informed arrangements, or simply a listener drawn to the haunting beauty of these ancient texts, this hymnal opens a door into a living tradition that has sustained worshippers for centuries.
