In 1876, a teenage boy from Ohio sat for a painting that would become one of the most recognizable images in American history. Nearly fifty years later, Henry Kelsey Devereux, now an elderly man, put pen to paper to tell the story from the other side of memory. He was fifteen years old when Archibald M. Willard asked him to pose as the drummer boy for 'The Spirit of '76,' originally conceived as a lighter work called 'Yankee Doodle.' What emerged instead was something defiant and grand: Revolutionary War soldiers marching forward with tattered flags, frozen in stubborn resilience. Devereux recalls the hours of posing, the real people behind the figures (including Hugh Mosher as the fifer), and the moment Willard realized his humorous sketch had become something that mattered. The memoir follows the painting's exhibition at the 1876 Centennial Exposition, where viewers wept before an image that seemed to distill American identity into three figures and a drum.
