The Southern Literary Messenger, Vol. II., No. 7, June, 1836

This June 1836 issue of the Southern Literary Messenger captures a moment when the American republic was still arguing about first principles. The opening piece tackles one of the era's most contentious constitutional questions: whether state legislatures had the right to instruct their senators how to vote, or whether senators should exercise independent judgment. The debate pits Virginia's emerging doctrine of legislative instruction against Federalist notions of deliberative representation, drawing on arguments from King, Jay, and Hamilton. These aren't dry legal treatises but urgent disagreements about what democracy meant in practice. Beyond politics, the Messenger offers poetry, essays, and literary criticism that reveal what educated Southerners were reading and arguing about. This is primary source material for anyone interested in the intellectual foundations of antebellum America, the evolution of American federalism, or the literary culture of the pre-Civil War South.
