The Southern Cross: A Play in Four Acts

The Southern Cross captures a specific American wound, the Civil War's devastation as seen through one household in 1864. Daingerfield, writing in the early 20th century, looked back at a Confederacy in its final months and found something more intimate than generals and battles: the slow unraveling of families. The Stuart home itself deteriorates alongside the Southern cause, its beauty fading like the dreams it once held. Young relatives Bev and Fair yearn to join the fight while dreading what that choice will cost them. Meanwhile, Aunt Marthy and Cupid, the household servants, reveal their own anxieties about missing family members, worry that intertwines with the white family's but exists in a separate sphere entirely. This is not a play of grand gestures or political speeches. It is about what survives when everything familiar is stripped away: love that persists through absence, loyalty tested by impossible choices, and the particular grief of watching a world end from the rooms where you once felt safe.
