The Song of the Exile—a Canadian Epic

The Song of the Exile—a Canadian Epic is a narrative poem by Wilfred S. Skeats, written in the late 19th century. It intertwines personal reflection with historical accounts, exploring themes of love, loss, and national identity through the eyes of a narrator torn between his Scottish heritage and his new life in Canada. The poem's cantos depict the protagonist's emotional turmoil as he grapples with class barriers that prevent him from marrying his beloved, while also reflecting on significant events and figures in Canadian history, such as Samuel de Champlain. This work offers a unique perspective on the experiences of exile and the complexities of belonging.
