The sociable ghost : Being the adventures of a reporter who was invited

In 1908, a New York reporter receives an unlikely invitation: a ghost wants him to cover a story. Not a murder, not a haunting, but a society ball deep beneath Trinity Churchyard, where the dead have gathered for their own glittering conventions, banquets, and cotillions. Olive Harper's forgotten gem is a razor-sharp satirical comedy that uses the supernatural as a mirror to reflect the absurdities of the living. Our reporter descends into a world of dead publishers holding court, deceased socialites networking from beyond the grave, and a singularly loquacious ghost who finds the bureaucracy of death infinitely amusing. Harper, writing at a time when women were expected to stick to domestic subjects, delivers an irreverent takedown of Gilded Age pretensions, media self-importance, and pious hypocrisy with a comic verve that feels startlingly modern. The result is neither horror nor simple farce, but something rarer: a deadpan comedy of manners from the afterlife that proves the rich and powerful are often just as hollow in death as they were in life.
