The Silverton Story

Perched 9,300 feet in a valley carved by ancient glaciers, Silverton confronts visitors with a truth most Colorado towns hide: this place should not exist. Surrounded by fourteen-thousand-foot peaks that hold snow year-round, accessible by a single winding road that closes more often than it opens, Silverton was never meant to be comfortable. Yet for over a century, miners, merchants, and misfits have carved lives from this thin air, chasing silver through tunnels that burrow into frozen rock, building a town where the only constant is the wind. Mary Ann Olsen traces this improbable saga from the first prospectors through the boom and bust cycles that nearly killed the town, up to the strange resilience that kept it breathing into the 1960s. This is not a chronicle of famous men or grand events - it is the story of ordinary people who chose to live where the air is too thin and the winters too long, and somehow made a community out of stubbornness and stone. For anyone who has driven through Silverton and wondered how anyone stayed, this book provides the answer: they couldn't leave.
