The Siege of Vicksburg, from the Diary of Seth J. Wells

This is not history written after the fact. It is history as it happened, captured in real time by a twenty-year-old Union soldier who knew he was living through something immense. Seth J. Wells recorded his days from November 1862 onward, watching his regiment drill, march, and endure the brutal tedium of camp life while the Confederate stronghold of Vicksburg loomed ahead. The diary captures what no textbook can: the specific texture of waiting, the cold creeping through canvas tents, the rivalries between seasoned veterans and fresh recruits, the uneasy interactions with Mississippi civilians whose homes had become a war zone.
