The Sherwood Foresters in the Great War 1914 - 1919: History of the 1/8th Battalion

This is military history from the inside. W. C. C. Weetman served with the 1/8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters, and his account reads with the authority of someone who lived it. He traces the unit from their 1914 annual training, through the chaos of mobilization, to their transformation from a territorial reserve force into soldiers confronting the daily reality of the Western Front. What emerges is not abstract strategy but the granular particulars of battalion life: the supply crises, the transport logistics, the friendships forged in uncertainty, and the steady accumulation of hard experience. Weetman writes about his comrades with the specificity of a man who knew their names, their courage, and their fates. For anyone interested in how ordinary men became soldiers in the Great War, this offers something no general history can: the view from within one battalion, written by someone who shared their mud and their losses.
