The Secrets of a Kuttite: An Authentic Story of Kut, Adventures in Captivity and Stamboul Intrigue

The year is 1915. British forces are strung across the Mesopotamian desert, their supply lines hemorrhaging, their water reserves evaporating under a relentless sun. Edward Mousley, a young subaltern in the Royal Field Artillery, has just arrived at Kut-el-Amara, a dusty outpost on the Tigris that is about to become a prison. What follows is one of the most harrowing sieges of the Great War. For months, Mousley and his fellow soldiers endure thirst that drives men mad, shells that fall without warning, and the creeping realization that no relief column is coming. When the garrison finally surrenders in April 1916, Mousley enters a new nightmare: a captivity that will carry him through the heart of the Ottoman Empire and into the spy-haunted streets of Constantinople. This is not war as abstraction. It is mud, dysentery, and the sound of men dying for lack of water. It is also black humor, fierce loyalty, and the strange dignity of soldiers who refuse to break. Mousley writes with the clarity of someone who survived by paying attention, and his account remains one of the most vivid and least sentimental portraits of the Great War's forgotten front.
