The Scottish Highlands, Highland Clans and Highland Regiments, Volume 2 (of 2)

This second volume continues the comprehensive 19th-century examination of Scottish Highland life, picking up where its predecessor left off to explore the intricate social fabric and martial traditions that defined this rugged region. The authors trace the evolution of the Highland clan system through periods of dramatic change, examining how land distribution policies reshaped ancient communities and how social hierarchies adapted to new economic realities. Particular attention falls on the Highland regiments, those legendary units whose distinctive dress and fierce reputation became synonymous with British military prowess. Written by scholars with direct knowledge of the region, this volume draws on local records, oral traditions, and official documentation to paint a portrait of a society in transition. For historians of Scotland, military enthusiasts, and anyone researching genealogical connections to Highland families, this remains an essential primary source, offering insights into a world that was already disappearing by the time these pages were written.
