The School and the World

Written in the aftermath of the Great War, when the old certainties of British society lay in ruins, this passionate polemic demands that schools prepare students for the world as it is, not as their elders wish it to be. Victor Gollancz draws on his own experiment running a voluntary Politics Class at a public school, where teenage boys eagerly debated the reconstruction of Europe, the meaning of democracy, and the failures of their elders' generation. He encountered fierce resistance from colleagues who believed such discussions危险 the fabric of authority. The project ultimately collapsed, but Gollancz refused to let the story end there. His argument remains urgent: education that shields young people from political reality produces citizens unprepared for democratic life. Nearly a century later, when debates about what schools should teach still burn with the same fury, The School and the World speaks across the decades to anyone who believes learning must mean engaging with the hard questions of our time.
