The Schemes of the Kaiser

This is a ferocious polemic from the heart of the Franco-German crisis, written by one of France's most vocal nationalists in the tense years before the Great War. Juliette Adam had no patience for diplomacy or measured analysis. Her target is Kaiser Wilhelm II, whom she portrays as a Machiavellian deceiver, a ruler who poses as a peacemaker while systematically pursuing German dominance over Europe. The Alsace-Lorraine question, that open wound from France's defeat in 1871, fuels her fury. Adam argues that beneath Wilhelm's public gestures toward reconciliation lies a ruthless strategic agenda that threatens everything France holds dear. This is not neutral history but passionate advocacy, a warning shot across the bow of European complacency. It captures the toxic atmosphere of pre-war politics: the mistrust, the arms race, the nationalist fervor building toward catastrophe. For readers interested in how World War I's architects were perceived in their own time, this book offers an urgent, angry, and deeply revealing French perspective.
