The Russian Opera

Written in the shadow of the First World War, Rosa Newmarch's landmark 1914 study remains the most penetrating early English-language account of how Russia forged its own operatic tradition out of raw folk material and fierce artistic ambition. Newmarch traces the journey from the primitive chants of early Slavic peasants, suppressed by church authorities hungry for conformity, through the revolutionary emergence of Glinka as the father of Russian opera, to the radiant, orchestrated explosions of Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky. This is not merely a catalog of composers and works; it is an argument about art under oppression, about how a nation's soul can sing louder than its censors. Newmarch writes with the authority of someone who heard these works performed in their prime, who knew the musicians and witnessed the battles between Westernizers and Nationalists that defined Russian musical culture. For anyone seeking to understand why Russian opera feels so distinctively vast, so haunted by both joy and sorrow, this book provides the essential context that purely musical analysis cannot.
