The Russian Advance

In the summer of 1914, as Europe lurched toward war, Marr Murray composed this urgent account of Russia's mobilization against Germany and Austria-Hungary. Written while battles still raged and outcomes remained unknowable, the book captures a nation in extraordinary crisis: workers abandoning strikes, public unrest quieting, and millions rallying behind the Tsar against the perceived Teutonic threat. Murray examines the strategic calculus of Russian military deployment, the explosive force of Slavic nationalism, and the ethnic complexities of Eastern Europe as the continent's old order collapsed. What elevates this work beyond mere chronicle is its temporal position, Murray recorded these events as they unfolded, sharing the author's own uncertainty about what mobilization would bring. For readers seeking to understand the eastern front's origins or how contemporaries experienced the war's first months, this remains an invaluable primary source.
