The Romance of Old New England Rooftrees

There is a particular magic in walking through old New England towns, where each weathered house seems to hold its breath, waiting to whisper its secrets. Mary Caroline Crawford understood this. In these pages, she leads readers through the remaining architectural treasures of colonial New England, but what she truly catalogs is the human drama embedded in their timber and stone. The book opens with the remarkable story of Bishop George Berkeley, the Irish philosopher who abandoned his academic career in London to establish a utopian college in Bermuda, dedicated to educating American youth and Indigenous peoples in Christian virtue. We encounter the tangled literary connections of the era: Berkeley's friendship with Jonathan Swift, and the tragic tale of Vanessa (Esther Vanhomrigh), whose own relationship with Swift would become one of the great romantic tragedies of English letters. These are not mere biographies. They are portraits of ambition, loss, and idealism set against the backdrop of a young America still defining itself. For readers who find poetry in clapboard walls and want history rendered as lived experience rather than dates and battles, this collection offers an alternative New England, one where philosophers dreamed impossible dreams beneath gambrel roofs.
