The Rise of Canada, from Barbarism to Wealth and Civilisation. Volume 1

Charles Roger's 1859 history offers a window into how Victorian Canadians understood their own origins. The title alone reveals its thesis: Canada rose from "barbarism" to "civilisation" through European enterprise. Roger traces this arc from John Cabot's 1497 voyage through Jacques Cartier's exploration of the St. Lawrence and the founding of Quebec, weaving together narratives of adventure, commerce, and imperial ambition. The book captures a pivotal era when the continent's interior remained unmapped to European eyes, and when encounters with Indigenous peoples operated through both curiosity and assumption. For modern readers, the work functions less as objective history than as a revealing artifact: it demonstrates how 19th-century colonists narrated their own arrival, framing displacement as progress and Indigenous presence as a barrier to be overcome. Volume One ends on the threshold of major colonial developments, leaving the reader to consider what "civilisation" meant to those writing its triumph. Essential reading for anyone interested in Canadian historiography, colonial narratives, or how nations construct origin stories.
