The Revolution in Tanner’s Lane

Step into the tumultuous heart of early 19th-century England, where Zachariah Coleman, a fervent Dissenter and staunch Republican, finds his deeply held convictions clashing with both societal norms and personal desires. In 1814, newly married but profoundly restless, Zachariah's life takes a dramatic turn when he becomes embroiled in the ill-fated Blanketeers' march of 1817. Forced to flee, his existence is irrevocably altered. The narrative then leaps two decades forward, shifting to the seemingly placid village of Cowfold, where the embers of political and religious upheaval are once again fanned. Here, Zachariah's past echoes in the lives of a new generation, their struggles mirroring his own but unfolding with distinct contours and consequences. "The Revolution in Tanner's Lane" is a masterclass in historical immersion, a deeply personal and often raw exploration of faith, politics, and the enduring search for identity amidst societal ferment. Writing under the pseudonym Mark Rutherford, William Hale White infuses this novel with an autobiographical intensity, crafting characters whose internal lives are as captivating as the external forces shaping their destinies. It's a poignant testament to the quiet revolutions that simmer beneath the surface of grand historical events, offering a vivid window into a pivotal era and the human cost of unwavering belief.
